60’s Album cover Experimentation & Evaluation

For my 1960’s themed album cover, I wanted to create an album which showed clear links to that period of time, ad I wanted to do this by laying out the album cover in a similar style to an album that you would commonly see in the sixties. Both of the albums that I created were inspired by the covers used for Elvis Presley’s albums, as I believe that many of his albums that were released had simple yet bold features on, which created an intriguing contrast that I believe suited the 60’s period very well.

This is the first album cover that I made which was inspired by the style of Presleys album covers. The main link that I have to Presleys is the bold coloured text and the contrast between the strong pink and green text. I find that this works well as it stands out from the image of the model, so you know who it is. If I was to retake this image, I would of probably changed the set up of the studio lighting to create more contrast on the model, and would have featured props such as a guitar or a band in the background, as it makes the album more appealing to look at, and shows more of a musical element in the album cover.

ALBUM FINAL

This is my other album cover which I have made, which I have also decided to use for my final album cover mainly due to the amount of effort I put into it, by adding features such as the record labels logo and little touches such as Elvis Presleys actual signature. I did this because these were the sort of features which you would see on a standard album cover at this period in time, and especially on the cover of someone like Elvis Presleys album due to his high standard of music. I think that the bold colours of the text works well as it stands out from the black and white background, which makes the name eye-catching and appealing to viewers. I also think that the section with the song list of the album works well as this also stands out from the background, making it noticeable and clear to the viewer.

Evaluation of Experimentation:

I believe that with my album cover experimentation, I have managed to clearly link my work to album covers from the period of the 1960’s, but I have also managed to add my own touches to the covers to make them unique, such as the artists signatures and the use of props e.g. guitar. I think that this worked well for my album covers as it made them unique, and although I was trying to make them look similar to Elvis presleys album covers, I have managed to interpret them in my own way. I think that the experimentation went well as to use different styles of photography in my work. e.g. close up portraits. I also changed the models in the images, which I believe was an effective idea, as it shows that I have not just experimented with different camera techniques and compositions, but I have also tried to change the overall look of the album covers by using different models.

If I was to fault what the work I have produced for my experimentation, I would say that the fact I took all of my images in a studio did not help with my experimentation, as it makes the background of the images look very plain. I  believe that if I used an different location for one of my album covers, they may ahem appeared more visually appealing to look at, and it would have also showed more effective experimentation. Another thing that I could have done to improve my level of experimentation would of been to include more research, such as looking at different musicians of various genres, as this would not only of given me more research, but it would have also given me the opportunity to show how different genres of music have different styled album covers. Some of the genres I could have looked at are rock, soul, funk etc.

In conclusion to this, I believe that I have showed effective experimentation of different musicians and album covers, but I could have definitely made more in depth research to enhance the quality of my experimentation, and could have done so by looking into different genres of music, and not just sticking to one musician.
